1) What inspired you to write "Entangled Destinies: Search for Love, Truth and Joy"?
I was inspired by my visit to Varanasi and the spiritual vibes I felt there. I learnt that women dance amidst burning funeral pyres at Manikarnika Ghat. I was intrigued. Why do women dance there with all the heat, and the smoke? I learnt that this is an annual ritual which is carried out to this day. The same evening, we went to visit the Ganga Aarti. Immediately after the vibrant aarti, the boatman steered the boat towards Manikarnika Ghat and we could see the flames leaping up from the burning pyres. The incident had a profound impact on me. I had just seen the flames celebrating life in the Ganga Aarti and now I was seeing the flames of death, almost in the same time and space.
I decided to weave all this into a story in my novel, which is a murder mystery infused with spirituality. It is about Riya, whose life takes a devastating turn when her beloved brother is murdered, and her father suddenly disappears. The book is full of twists and turns, which will not only entertain but will also make you reflect on your own life's journey, on the complexities of love, truth, and identity against the backdrop of Varanasi.
2) Why did you change your genre in your second book, ‘The Power of Creativity in Education: Proven Strategies to Transform Young Minds’?
I have worked as an educator for more than 35 years. I am also a CBSE resource person. I have observed closely how teachers teach and how students learn. Worldwide educators face a critical issue: how to engage students in a way that ignites their passion for learning. Creativity can ignite that passion for learning. But unfortunately, it is believed that it is a trait you are born with. If you don’t have it there is not much you can do about it. But research has shown that creativity can be taught through some techniques and actionable strategies. So, I wrote this book, hoping to drive the nation forward by nurturing young minds.
Both my books have been Amazon bestsellers.
3) Walk us through the process of publishing the book.
I self-published both my books and I enjoyed the journey. After completing the manuscript, I refined and edited it, ensuring that each character's journey was authentic and compelling. I enhanced the emotional depth to keep the readers engaged. Then I formatted it, designed the cover and got it printed. All this requires patience, dedication, and a strong belief in your work.
4) Would you recommend exploring or sticking to one genre as a writer?
Sticking to one genre allows you to hone your craft and build a loyal audience within that niche. However, exploring different genres can be rewarding and can help you grow as a writer. It challenges you to think differently, experiment with new techniques, and reach a broader audience. Personally, I enjoy exploring various themes and genres. Ultimately, it’s important to stay true to your voice and passion.
5) How do you measure your literary success?
By the impact my stories have on readers, more than awards or sales, though they are also important. One of my most thrilling moments was when a reader presented me with a bouquet of flowers at 7:30 a.m. and said that he loved the book, which he had read the previous night. If my books spark emotions, provoke thought, or inspire change, then I feel I've achieved something meaningful.
6) As an educationist, please share tips on instilling reading habits at a young age.
Instilling reading habits in children starts with making reading a joyful and regular part of their lives. Children mimic the behaviour of adults around them. If they see you reading regularly, they are more likely to pick up the habit. Surround them with books, whether at home or in their classrooms. Make sure books are accessible and cater to their interests. Set aside time each day for reading together. This not only builds a habit but also creates a bonding experience.
Allow children to pick the books they want to read. It gives them a sense of ownership and keeps their interest alive. Also encourage them to talk about the stories, ask questions, and share their thoughts as this deepens their engagement and comprehension.
7) Do you think social media is deceiving the ardent reading chunk?
Social media has certainly changed the way we consume content. However, I wouldn’t say it’s deceiving the reading community. Social media can connect readers with books and authors they might not have discovered otherwise. It’s about balance—while social media offers quick, easily digestible content, the youth should understand that reading encourages imagination and deeper thought.
8) Tell us one skill you think every writer should possess.
The skill of observation, the ability to keenly observe the world around you—people, emotions, situations, and even the smallest details. This skill enriches your writing. It allows you to create authentic characters, vivid settings, and realistic dialogues.
9) What are your future writing plans?
I am writing the second book of my series, ‘Entangled Destinies’. The sequel is titled, ‘Entangled Destinies: Forbidden Secrets: One Murder: Many Life-Lessons’. It takes the previous murder mystery forward, and introduces more exotic locales such as the Rann of Kutchh.
I am also writing Part 2 of my earlier non-fiction. The new book, ‘The Power of Creativity in Education: Empowering Parents and Communities’, will highlight the role of parents and society. I feel that we will be able to drive the nation forward only if parents, teachers and society work hand in hand.
10) One message you would send to all readers.
Never underestimate the power of stories and knowledge to transform your life. Books have the ability to broaden your perspective, evoke deep emotions, and inspire change. Keep reading and stay curious.
